Genre research: horror

Common Camera Angles in Horror (CAMS)

  • High angles are used to make the figure or object that is being looked down upon seem wholly powerless and vulnerable

Close-ups are used to see the reactions of the actors, with this shot you can see the most emotion on faces and its also used to capture detail in an important scene

Panning shots are often used in this Genre to make out a character is being followed or watched, which also establishes a scene so the audience can see the full view. This shot builds up suspense also

Common Mis-En-Scene in Horror (CLAMPS)

Dark, rural location or somewhere desired where nobody else would be. Some places might be abandoned or isolated

Knives, axes, and chainsaws are common devices in horror movies because they may cause a long, agonizing death. Since horror movies are meant to be highly gory, the more brutal the weapons are, the better the response to the movie will be.

Horror movie characters typically appear to be dressed casually, but a lot of thought goes into choosing their attire to give clues about their personalities and roles in the film. Even if the villains wear specific outfits (some wear masks, for instance), their lack of identity serves to frighten the audience.

Common Editing in your genre

Special effects can be used in very subtle ways such as colour correcting, which in insidious, was most likely used to intensify the colour of the antagonist to make it look more aesthetically appealing and even more horrifying.

Pacing of horror film trailers is a key part of letting the audience watching know what genre the trailer is and in this case, what sub-genre the horror film falls into, which is done through the length of the shots.

To build pace quickly, cuts are usually used to get from one shot to the next rapidly, with no transitions in between the two shots.

Common sound in your genre

Infrasound: Inject low sound waves (about 20Hz or less) that human ears can’t hear, but human bodies can feel.

Dissonance: Rearrange standard musical structures to achieve a sense of conflict, unrest, and instability

Minor keys: Switch a composition or sound bite from a major key to a minor one to yield a dark, dreadful sound.

Example films in your genre

Haloween ends

The black phone

Smile

Some elements in the genre of horror that I like is that each film created under this genes creates some sort of suspense which is really interesting to watch. The jumpscares added to horror movies create an exciting experience for me and as well as for other people since you have no idea when something at your screen might jump at you. Horror movies are also an excellent way to increase the level of adrenaline in your body.

Since you have no idea what to expect in a horror movie, some things might actually be disturbing.  Scenes can remind people of traumas or create new ones, which can have a huge influence on the quality of sleep. The normal sleeping schedule can be disrupted this way. Some scenes are exaggerated with the help of special effect so that they will have a strong impact on the audience.
